People Who Hate Valentine's Day Bug Me

Do you remember when you were little and you would make plates of cookies and valentines with your mom to leave on your friend's and neighbor's porches and doorbell ditch? It was such a rush to sneak up to the door, leave the cookies and valentine on the step, press the doorbell and then dash to the side of the house to hide before they saw me. I would peak around the corner to watch them find it. I wanted to do it all year long! I think Valentine's Day was one of the best times ever. I always enjoyed handing out valentines to my friends to tell them I love them. Even in High School when handing them out was no longer popular I would still give select friends a valentine. In fact when I was a Senior my mom bought me some super awesome tinfoil Disney Princess valentines that were better than your average little kid valentine and I handed some of them out to my friends (they thought they were cool). This year I was excited when I found the rest of them I had left from back then and gave them to my friends again. Some of them have gotten one twice now, but only one friend remembered that from four years ago and that was Alisa (of course).

Only once have I had a Valentine's Day with a boyfriend, and that was also my first kiss. Isn't that sweet. (I can see you going, "Awww" while you read this.) But that experience was also about 3 years ago and I've been single for every Valentine's Day before and after that. So when people around me start complaining that "Singles-Awareness Day" is coming up I get really annoyed. I know that when you're single and you don't want to be that holiday points it out even more and you feel more alone than normal. But you AREN'T alone. All of us are surrounded by friends and family regardless of our romantic status. Why can't we take the holiday to appreciate everyone we love in our lives instead of dwelling on the fact we don't have a special someone to celebrate with?

Okay, rant over. So you anti-Valentine people now know my opinion.

So for some good news I actually had a date the day before Valentines!! I was pretty excited. One of my single guy friends called me up and asked me to come with him to the Utah Symphony. I haven't been in over a year since I always end up going to the Opera so I was really excited. We ended up being late and couldn't go in until Intermission but the second half would have been my favorite regardless. They played Dvorak's 9th Symphony "From the New World" which I played recently in my community orchestra. And as a really cool twist my friend brought a copy of the score for us to follow along with while we watched. I've never head of someone doing that before. It tore me two ways because I liked following the music since I'm familiar with it, but then I'd look up and get fascinated watching the violinists and that would make me lose my spot in the score. So I went around in circles like that a bit, but it was so amazing regardless. And it was a lot of fun seeing my friend again. We always have a blast when we hang out. The silly guy decided to go to BYU so I don't get to see him very often. I can't blame him too much though, I do like the color blue more than red. Don't I just have a ton of school pride. Lol!

Hope you had a good Valentine's Day!

Bibliophile - Book Lover - That's me!

I absolutely love to read. My whole family is a bunch of readers and every one of us has our own collection of books. (Mine covers my ledge stretching along my 9 foot wall... and I ran out of room for them.) When I was younger (maybe 10) I found out my Grandma Walker kept track of every book she read in a journal and wrote it down, so I began my own book journal. So since 1997-ish I've written down each book's title, author, summary, date finished, how much I like it, and number of pages. I like to keep track of how many pages I've read in a year and the most I've ever gotten was just over 11,000 pages. This year I'm up to about 7,000 which is normal for me at this point. Seeing how I'm obsessed with books I thought I'd mention some of my favorites and favorite authors if you're ever looking for something to read since I have a few people who ask me for reading suggestions as it is. My new found favorite author is Brandon Sanderson. If you haven't he...

Best View in Town

Hiking has really had its benefits this summer. I've really enjoyed taking along m y camera, as you can tell. Even if I just used my phone's camera. These pictures are from two separate hikes, Ensign Peak and Grandeur Peak. What's great about both of these hikes is that once you've climbed the top they offer an amazing view of the valley. Many people know about Ensign Peak, but what I love about Grandeur Peak is the absolute brilliance of the view. It's from a much higher vantage point and offers a broader view of the Salt Lake Valley. Pictures can't do it justice. I've hiked it before and stayed up there while it got dark and watched fireworks for the fourth of July and I've never seen anything so beautiful to compare to it. Ensign Peak had an amazing view the night we hiked it. It was growing dark as we sat at the top and the thunder clouds rolling in added a great element to the pictures we took and made the night seem darker than it normally would h...

Fall is in the Air

Our first year of adventures in the married life has been pretty great. COVID actually opened up a lot of travel opportunities we couldn't have afforded otherwise. After going to Disney World earlier in the year, I never imagined that I would also be able to visit Disneyland in the fall, let alone twice! Disneyland To start, Disneyland with my mom, Lizzie and my niece and nephew in September. This was their first time (technically my niece's second but she was an infant the first time.) And doing Disneyland with kids is just magical. Yes, they get tired and grumpy and have no patience when they're hungry but they also believe everything they see. That kind of magic is just great to witness. We walked into the park and Micky and Minnie were at the train station to greet everyone coming in. My nephew was just in awe as my niece was so excited to see Minnie and Mickey in real life. They also quickly figured out that after waiting in a line, a really cool ride was at the end of...
