Dating is Weird when you're 30

For the past couple months I've gone on a few dates from an online LDS dating app. I figure that I should make a few notes about this one. I tend to go for guys that are a bit nerdy - dating someone who is smart is important for me because I want someone equally as mentally stimulating as I am and I don't care if they're smarter or as smart as me either. I also like to date someone with some of my interests - not all of them, but I like to talk and we need something in common to get anywhere.

Enter: Shawn
Poor Shawn, at first I enjoyed going on a couple dates but I could only give it three dates before I was done. I felt like we kept talking about the same topics over and over. We also didn't have enough in common.... I mean, he didn't even like to read books. That's pretty hard for a librarian to swallow. So, I decided that the other guy who I'd been on just as many dates with was a better option.

Enter: Nathan
So Nathan strikes me as the quiet and shy person who probably hasn't dated much (turned out to be true) but is a nerdy and smart person (also true.) We started with a date going to dinner at the Spaghetti Factory. I learned that he has a slight speech impediment and I think this might contribute to his shyness. He sounds like he's from back East but it's more likely influenced from England and other places. That was another plus - he has lived in England and loves it there which gave us a lot to talk about right off.Turn out he's also a bigger Disney nerd than I am and has corrected me on my movie quotes.... that's pretty impressive.

So I was alternating the first three dates between these two guys when I decided I preferred going out with Nathan because he was more relatable and just a sweet guy.

Because I'm terribly forgetful I've listed my first 5 dates with Nathan here.

Date 1 - Spaghetti Factory August 7th, 2018
Date 2 - Off Broadway Theater September 7
Date 3 - Desert Star Theater September 22
Date 4 - Temple Square October 11
Date 5 - Ballet West October 26

He still hadn't held my hand, so on our last date I asked if he would hold it claiming my hands were cold. Turns out that was a smart move, his hands were incredibly warm! He also got very excited after that, I think I just confirmed for him that I was interested because he was a lot more animated the rest of the night!

We've also been taking a slower pace, but I'm fine with slow, I feel no rush. I don't even mind he hadn't tried to hold my hand earlier or anything, especially considering I don't think he's done so before. I don't know why. There's nothing wrong with him. I suspect he was a bit of a late bloomer when it came to dating, but I don't know. He's perfectly normal and very cute boy next door! I don't know.

So far he doesn't seem to mind me talking his ear off and I don't mind trying to become friends first. He's not much of a texter or caller so I tend to word vomit on our dates. Hahahaha. But he's very good at answering any questions I give him and I've learned a lot about his family and learned he's from Morgan where he knows some friends of mine from High  School.

Next date is Leatherby's to get ice cream, but soon it'll be too cold for ice cream!! Gotta get it before I'm freezing in winter and want hot chocolate instead.

Can I just say dating when you're 30 is really weird? Because I'm still getting butterflies and stuff when I get excited for dates but I'm so much more chill and less nervous about things than I used to be? I realize my attitude has relaxed and I'm less nervous about what they'll think about me, because I don't care and think I'm pretty great anyway. This is also nice because I don't feel needy and I feel like I'm approaching dating with a level head and know more about what I want. But I also feel like the pressure about dating is a little more intense from friends and family. They want so much for me to get married that I'm starting to play the dating game a little close to the chest. That's also new for me, but I'm not terribly worried about when I'll get married because I'm already pretty sure it'll happen. Just gotta keep playing the game until one of them sticks! (Cross fingers for me this time round, kay?)

Bibliophile - Book Lover - That's me!

I absolutely love to read. My whole family is a bunch of readers and every one of us has our own collection of books. (Mine covers my ledge stretching along my 9 foot wall... and I ran out of room for them.) When I was younger (maybe 10) I found out my Grandma Walker kept track of every book she read in a journal and wrote it down, so I began my own book journal. So since 1997-ish I've written down each book's title, author, summary, date finished, how much I like it, and number of pages. I like to keep track of how many pages I've read in a year and the most I've ever gotten was just over 11,000 pages. This year I'm up to about 7,000 which is normal for me at this point. Seeing how I'm obsessed with books I thought I'd mention some of my favorites and favorite authors if you're ever looking for something to read since I have a few people who ask me for reading suggestions as it is. My new found favorite author is Brandon Sanderson. If you haven't he...

Best View in Town

Hiking has really had its benefits this summer. I've really enjoyed taking along m y camera, as you can tell. Even if I just used my phone's camera. These pictures are from two separate hikes, Ensign Peak and Grandeur Peak. What's great about both of these hikes is that once you've climbed the top they offer an amazing view of the valley. Many people know about Ensign Peak, but what I love about Grandeur Peak is the absolute brilliance of the view. It's from a much higher vantage point and offers a broader view of the Salt Lake Valley. Pictures can't do it justice. I've hiked it before and stayed up there while it got dark and watched fireworks for the fourth of July and I've never seen anything so beautiful to compare to it. Ensign Peak had an amazing view the night we hiked it. It was growing dark as we sat at the top and the thunder clouds rolling in added a great element to the pictures we took and made the night seem darker than it normally would h...

Fall is in the Air

Our first year of adventures in the married life has been pretty great. COVID actually opened up a lot of travel opportunities we couldn't have afforded otherwise. After going to Disney World earlier in the year, I never imagined that I would also be able to visit Disneyland in the fall, let alone twice! Disneyland To start, Disneyland with my mom, Lizzie and my niece and nephew in September. This was their first time (technically my niece's second but she was an infant the first time.) And doing Disneyland with kids is just magical. Yes, they get tired and grumpy and have no patience when they're hungry but they also believe everything they see. That kind of magic is just great to witness. We walked into the park and Micky and Minnie were at the train station to greet everyone coming in. My nephew was just in awe as my niece was so excited to see Minnie and Mickey in real life. They also quickly figured out that after waiting in a line, a really cool ride was at the end of...
