Blue Satin Sashes

How is it that the queen of prom dress shopping can't find the right dress? Limited by color and picky in style create barriers in the world of satin. Green, pink, turquoise, black, and red are plentifully stacked in every bridal and prom store. You would think one of them would carry a royal blue dress that I like. The blue dresses I found were all horrible styles that were meant for girls with either no figure, or were incredibly tiny. Sure, I could order one but it'd have to be rushed and then it would leave me penniless on the streets. My normal prom dress store (the DI) has been ransacked by highschoolers also going to proms and formals and nothing blue can be found there.

Why blue do you say? Need you ask? Blue happens to be a very important color. Why do you think they call it Royal Blue? It also happens to be the same color as my eyes and I like how the color enhances them. And the deep and richest blue, or navy, is my favorite color. Like midnight sky. Instead of looking at the sun going down, look in the opposite direction at the sky that is dark, that is my favorite color. But the honest reason for needing a royal blue dress is I need it for my best friend's wedding where I'll be her maid of honor. I just want to use it for a winter formal ball as well before that.

One week before the ball. What can Cinderella do? I highly doubt Fairy God-Mothers can be found to rescue me. Dress shopping left me only exasperated and so Cinderella returns home to tell her mother about all the problems of finding a dress at the store. While my feet are up on a pillow with an ice-pack to my head, my mother presents an idea which has me leaping to my feet to grab my computer. It was only then I realized my mother was my Fairy God-Mother in disguise. She had an idea that had crossed my mind earlier, but I had thought it was impossible to accomplish in a week. But mom thinks we have enough time to sew a dress. So after searching patterns online, off we go to the fabric store on Black Friday.

While still on a budget, I couldn't resist getting the blue satin that I knew would make my dress what I wanted it to be. With it I got a sheer blue fabric to lay over it, white ribbon for a bow, and white flowers for embellishments. Just looking at the gorgeous fabric made me excited! Cutting out fabric took forever, especially since it's my least favorite part, and there's 3 layers of skirt and bodice to cut out for. Just seeing what I've sown with the bodice though makes me hopefull that this will turn out to be a beautiful dress.

Now I have two days till the ball. I don't know if the dress will be finished or not, hopefully I can get a lot done today and tomorrow. If nothing else, I know it'll be done in plenty of time before my friend's wedding, but I'd really really love to be able to wear it at the dance where I'll fit in wearing a beatiful blue formal gown. I must say I'm grateful for my Fairy God-Father who happens to be my Grandpa who allowed me to borrow his amazing sewing machine to help accomplish the task. My only last wish would be to find matching blue satin slippers. Cross your fingers. I'm off to sew. (After the dress is finished I'm going to re-write the end of this and hopefully post a picture of it.)

Silver white winters that melt into springs

These are a few of my favorite things

Bibliophile - Book Lover - That's me!

I absolutely love to read. My whole family is a bunch of readers and every one of us has our own collection of books. (Mine covers my ledge stretching along my 9 foot wall... and I ran out of room for them.) When I was younger (maybe 10) I found out my Grandma Walker kept track of every book she read in a journal and wrote it down, so I began my own book journal. So since 1997-ish I've written down each book's title, author, summary, date finished, how much I like it, and number of pages. I like to keep track of how many pages I've read in a year and the most I've ever gotten was just over 11,000 pages. This year I'm up to about 7,000 which is normal for me at this point. Seeing how I'm obsessed with books I thought I'd mention some of my favorites and favorite authors if you're ever looking for something to read since I have a few people who ask me for reading suggestions as it is. My new found favorite author is Brandon Sanderson. If you haven't he...

Best View in Town

Hiking has really had its benefits this summer. I've really enjoyed taking along m y camera, as you can tell. Even if I just used my phone's camera. These pictures are from two separate hikes, Ensign Peak and Grandeur Peak. What's great about both of these hikes is that once you've climbed the top they offer an amazing view of the valley. Many people know about Ensign Peak, but what I love about Grandeur Peak is the absolute brilliance of the view. It's from a much higher vantage point and offers a broader view of the Salt Lake Valley. Pictures can't do it justice. I've hiked it before and stayed up there while it got dark and watched fireworks for the fourth of July and I've never seen anything so beautiful to compare to it. Ensign Peak had an amazing view the night we hiked it. It was growing dark as we sat at the top and the thunder clouds rolling in added a great element to the pictures we took and made the night seem darker than it normally would h...

Fall is in the Air

Our first year of adventures in the married life has been pretty great. COVID actually opened up a lot of travel opportunities we couldn't have afforded otherwise. After going to Disney World earlier in the year, I never imagined that I would also be able to visit Disneyland in the fall, let alone twice! Disneyland To start, Disneyland with my mom, Lizzie and my niece and nephew in September. This was their first time (technically my niece's second but she was an infant the first time.) And doing Disneyland with kids is just magical. Yes, they get tired and grumpy and have no patience when they're hungry but they also believe everything they see. That kind of magic is just great to witness. We walked into the park and Micky and Minnie were at the train station to greet everyone coming in. My nephew was just in awe as my niece was so excited to see Minnie and Mickey in real life. They also quickly figured out that after waiting in a line, a really cool ride was at the end of...
