Practically Perfect Halloween

I am a crazy Halloween person and every October I start planning my costume for the next coming year. Which I have to say is a fabulous idea because then I have 12 months to check DI to find different parts of my costume and accessories. So my costume was absolutely the bomb this year! My gracious mother helped me understand how to sew my coat (I really did most of it. She only helped pin things in and hemmed the bottom). And she also sewed my carpet bag. But because of DI I found my amazing hat, skirt, and shirt. I made the scarf too. I admit I paid good money for her umbrella. But it was soooo cool!!!!!!!!!!! I love that umbrella.

The day before Halloween I went to a costume dance at the community college and I had literally been sewing for 3 days straight trying to get the coat done. I finally got it done enough that I could make it to the dance just over an hour late. But I got there just in time for the costume contest. I was very shocked when they called Mary Poppins as the winner for the girl's costumes! At first I didn't think they had called me until a friend ran up and told me to get up there. I felt so good about my costume after that! I got a gift card to a nearby Mexican restaurant and a candy bar. Since my mom had complained about sewing the coat I decided to take her to the restaurant. The whole time I was at the dance I was constantly having random people come up and complementing me on my costume, giving me thumbs up, asking to take my picture or having me take a picture with them. Every time I walked around the room people would point at me and say to their friends, "Look, it's Mary Poppins!"

The day of Halloween we raked leaves in the morning. I thought this was a great time to take pictures even though I looked like crap because my dog was being adorable. I hadn't played in the leaves for a long time and it was a lot of fun with my siblings and some of the dogs. I've decided I like the smell of fallen leaves. I even got buried in them from head to toe with only my face showing. We have so many from our oak brush and maple tree that it was easy to get a huge pile. I think we filled up close to 12 bags. It was a ton! That includes the leaves that had drifted to the neighbors yard we raked up.

After the raking we decided we needed to implement a new tradition for Halloween because now we're all too old to Trick-Or-Treat and we need something fun to do. So off we headed to Gardner Village in our costumes. Lizzie was a gypsy and I went again as Mary Poppins. Mom tried to wear Halloween colors. I hadn't been there since 5th grade and the displays were amazing so I was really excited to go. I loved the witches that were on display throughout the village. My favorite ones were the witches playing piano and riding their bicycle through the air.

All through the shops people were once again pointing out my costume. As I'd leave the workers would say, "Thanks for coming in Mary Poppins!" or someone in the store would say to their kids, "Look, Mary Poppins is over there!" In fact, two little girls thought I was the real thing. One was a 2 year old who's parents asked if she could meet Mary Poppins. I agreed readily and went up to her and asked in a British accent, "Are you Jane? And don't you have a brother named Michael?" Her big blue eyes just looked at me in awe. Her parents asked her, "Is she spoonful of sugar?" And she just nodded her head and continued to stare at me. She was so cute!

Now I have a big decision to make. Do I continue to work on the costume I had in plan for next year? Or do I do Mary Poppins again? Either way, Mary is going to be used again, and the other one will get used at some point too. But I can't decide if Mary should wait or the new idea. It's too hard to pick!

Bibliophile - Book Lover - That's me!

I absolutely love to read. My whole family is a bunch of readers and every one of us has our own collection of books. (Mine covers my ledge stretching along my 9 foot wall... and I ran out of room for them.) When I was younger (maybe 10) I found out my Grandma Walker kept track of every book she read in a journal and wrote it down, so I began my own book journal. So since 1997-ish I've written down each book's title, author, summary, date finished, how much I like it, and number of pages. I like to keep track of how many pages I've read in a year and the most I've ever gotten was just over 11,000 pages. This year I'm up to about 7,000 which is normal for me at this point. Seeing how I'm obsessed with books I thought I'd mention some of my favorites and favorite authors if you're ever looking for something to read since I have a few people who ask me for reading suggestions as it is. My new found favorite author is Brandon Sanderson. If you haven't he...

Best View in Town

Hiking has really had its benefits this summer. I've really enjoyed taking along m y camera, as you can tell. Even if I just used my phone's camera. These pictures are from two separate hikes, Ensign Peak and Grandeur Peak. What's great about both of these hikes is that once you've climbed the top they offer an amazing view of the valley. Many people know about Ensign Peak, but what I love about Grandeur Peak is the absolute brilliance of the view. It's from a much higher vantage point and offers a broader view of the Salt Lake Valley. Pictures can't do it justice. I've hiked it before and stayed up there while it got dark and watched fireworks for the fourth of July and I've never seen anything so beautiful to compare to it. Ensign Peak had an amazing view the night we hiked it. It was growing dark as we sat at the top and the thunder clouds rolling in added a great element to the pictures we took and made the night seem darker than it normally would h...

Fall is in the Air

Our first year of adventures in the married life has been pretty great. COVID actually opened up a lot of travel opportunities we couldn't have afforded otherwise. After going to Disney World earlier in the year, I never imagined that I would also be able to visit Disneyland in the fall, let alone twice! Disneyland To start, Disneyland with my mom, Lizzie and my niece and nephew in September. This was their first time (technically my niece's second but she was an infant the first time.) And doing Disneyland with kids is just magical. Yes, they get tired and grumpy and have no patience when they're hungry but they also believe everything they see. That kind of magic is just great to witness. We walked into the park and Micky and Minnie were at the train station to greet everyone coming in. My nephew was just in awe as my niece was so excited to see Minnie and Mickey in real life. They also quickly figured out that after waiting in a line, a really cool ride was at the end of...
